Just Wondering

I'm an incoming freshman, hoping to play trumpet in the marching band (obviously :-] ).
I played trumpet in marching band at my high school. However, in concert band I played oboe. How much of a dampener would this put on my chances of making it into Purdue's marching band?

Playing ability is an important part of being in Purdue's band, so the harsh answer is that you wont make it if you cant play your horn.

However, there is a lot more to playing ability than just range. If you are able to play musically (which I assume you must be able to do on oboe) then you already have half of the skill.

As for the actual trumpet part, there is still over a month left before band camp to get your lips into shape. And if you're practicing all summer, you may be equal to all the students coming in that haven't been practicing all summer (tisk tisk to them).

So, it may take a little more effort to get your chops into shape, but your chances of making the band are fine.

Yes, like Pete said, make sure you're practicing now so your chops will be ready to go for band camp. Also, as soon as you receive the audition music, practice that so you will be prepared to play it.

The official playing audition occurs Sunday night, the first night you are here. This is when parts are decided (1st, 2nd, 3rd). If for some reason you don't practice much and you arrive and do poorly on the playing audition, we may reevaluate your playing ability at the end of the week if necessary.

The best advice is to just show up ready to play.
