Two (more) Sub Requests

Hey gang.

I have an exam this Thursday, so I am forced to ask for a sub for this Thursday's GABS game vs. Maryland. Coach Versyp is feeding us, so this gig comes with free food. Call time is 5:45, and should be a great game.

Also, I'm not going to be able to go to the New Years Day game vs. Michigan State, so if anyone in town would be able to cover me for that, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks!

Sub for Boiler Box Band on Saturday

Hey gang.
I know it's ridiculously late notice, but if anyone could sub for me at the Boiler Box Band game on Saturday, I'd really appreciate it,
Call time is 6:15 pm.
I'd be willing to trade this for future subs at a Boiler Brass game, or another price to be negotiated.
Thanks so much!

Here's Genetic Fallacy For You

Two Quotes From Barack Obama:

"The point I was making was not that Grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn't. But she is a typical white person, who, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know, you know, there's a reaction that's been bred in our experiences that don't go away and that sometimes come out in the wrong way, and that's just the nature of race in our society."

"It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." --explaining his troubles winning over some working-class voters

Um, ok. If this isn't genetic fallacy, what is? If you are reading this and have found that you've been struck with confusion because you have no idea what 'genetic fallacy' means, then let me help you out. It's defined as a conclusion is based on an argument that the origins of a person, idea, institute, or theory determine its character, nature, or worth. Hmm, in the first quote, the one about his grandmother, Obama claims that all people (not just whites), are prejudice toward other races because there is some inescapable force influencing them from within. So racism is...natural? According to what Obama said, it's not grandma's fault she says some bad things every now and then.  If not, please correct me now, but that's what I got.

In the second quote, which I'm sure nearly all of you have heard before, Obama basically comes out and calls all of middle America ignorant, too dumb to understand their own frustrations.  What?  He wants to be president of the US and is putting himself on a pedestal, like he's better, more educated.  I wonder how many people from that part of the country he's actually stopped to talk to in order to come up with that opinion.  Maybe instead of preaching in Europe, he should start talking to his own country because that is one of the most prejudice things I have heard in my lifetime from someone who's supposed to lead this country.

Eat at Moe's Wednesday, Oct. 8th to support the Goldusters and the Boilerettes!

You should all go eat at Moe's tomorrow between 11 AM and 9 PM. If I've got all my facts straight, and if they are doing the same as last year, the Goldusters and the Boilerettes will be traveling to Disney World in Orlando, FL to participate in a competition that is held there. As such, they need to pay to go to this competition, and it's something that's not funded by the band department (I believe), so it would be out of pocket if they didn't do fundraising for it. If I remember right from what Annemarie Heise said at the student leader meeting last week, a dollar from every meal purchased will go towards fundraising for the Boilerettes and Goldusters. If you get a chance and you have time, please make a point to go to Moe's and help support them!

For more information about this, look up the following on Facebook:

Skip-A-Meal For Purdue Golduster Dance Team and Purdue Boilerette Twirlers!

Racquetball anyone?

dust off the old racquet and tube of blue balls!! its racquetball time!!!

it seems to me that every time i play racquetball, there are at least 5 other people that want to go. unfortunately, its tough since its at most a 4 person game, so someone will pretty much always get left out.
so i have an idea. im considering organizing the first (hopefully of many) trumpet racquetball tournament! not only would this be a blast, but it should be relatively safe. maybe we could actually have an event withOUT an injury...

depending on the level of interest, we can do both a singles and doubles bracket, with prizes of some sort for each. and i think we could do this regularly (once a month, every other month, or just once per semester...) if we have fun with it.

before we can start the planning though, i need to know who would be interested in such an event. so if you are interested, leave a post here or find me at practice and let me know. right now i just need a headcount to see if its even worth planning. we can work out the details later.

Hey gang.
I have a ticket to Friday's Wynton Marsalis concert that I'm not going to be needing.
If anyone missed out on the first group order, you can have mine.
We got a group rate, so it's $25.
Thanks!

Religion Opinions

alright, i got the impression from a few individuals... ok mostly glen... that there MAY be some differing religious opinions in our lil group of trumpet playing friends. so i thought i might start a CIVILIZED conversation on said topic to see what you all think about religion.
for the record, im getting a minor in religious studies for this very reason; i like to know what people believe and why they believe it, such things are interesting to me.

fine print: debating is welcome, however i suggest that we try to keep it polite... i dont want to start a holy war here. also, using the phrase "thats just stupid" and similar statements, are unacceptable; we are perfectly capable of holding an intelligent conversation.

i myself was raised catholic and my family is fairly religious. i am currently not practicing as i have qualms with the contradictions and imperfections of the "perfect being" that is God.

SNL: GOOGLY-EYED GARDENER (Christopher Walden)

This is by far one of my favorite SNL scits, and especially since I brought politics into the site, which is never friendly, I thought I'd try lighten up the mood by posting something that should make you laugh a bit.

ALSO...check out another of my favorite SNL scits:

My Photo Essay:

Jerod Felton's photo essay:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/18/world/middleeast/18yemen.html?ref=middleeast

This is an interesting article in regards to the recent attack in the small country of Yemen in the middle east, yet I have a hard time seeing the url as a photo essay because the pictures the story contains do not tell the reader what's going on. You basically have to read the entire page to understand what occured, just looking at the page's three pictures does quite cut it. Though, the main photo does create enough interest for the reader to read the article, so I guess in that way, the shot was effective, and credit should be given for inserting the photo. It poses enough curiosity for the reader to want to see what happened in Yemen.

My view on the subject is that, as sad as it may sound, the event just sorta blends into all the other tragedy going on throughout the middle east at this time. The fact that Yemen is so small and relatively unheard of makes the bombing of the U.S. embassey pop out a little bit more, and the article's main photo further blends what just occured in Yemen into what's been going on throughout the area.

Comment by Sean to the PURDUE TRUMPETS: I'm not posting random blogs about politics & world events for fun, it's for my ENGL 106 class, which uses this blog website in order to publish projects. What's stinks is that I was already signed up for the site during the summer, for the purdue trumpets blog. In anyone could tell me how to create myself a new blog page I'd be really thankful so I no longer have to bombard you all with my seemingly random ramblings on odd topics. I hope no offence was taking from my JOHN MCCAIN blog. Boiler Up!

Presidential Debate 2008: John McCain

In this YouTube video, John McCain discusses his views on taxes and what "being rich" actually means.  He also speaks of privacy vs. security and the war in Iraq.  However, I'm mostly going to focus on what he talked about taxes and riches because it is something I can relate to a lot better than the other two issues.  McCain's argument is that in tough economic times, taxes should not be raised, that that is not the solution to the problem.  He also doesn't believe that taxing the "rich" more heavily would solve the problem either.  When asked to define "rich,"  McCain starts off by saying that some of the richest ($$$) people he's known have been some of the most unhappy  people he's known, that being rich is not everything in life.  He feels that "rich" is defined by a home, a good job, an education, and the ability to hand your children a better world than the one you lived in.  I agree with his definition.  Although having a lot of money is great, it can't buy you happiness, and in that sense, it cannot be the stat that defines you.  As far as taxes go, McCain doesn't want to take money from the rich, or start a class war with wealth redistribution, that won't solve anything.  Money is not the focus in life, it is simply a trade tool.  Peace of mind and who you are are what's important.  McCain wants everyone to be rich, and although $$$ it will probably never happen, the definition he gave for "rich" is reachable.  Let's give tax credits for n-number of children and health care.  Let's not classify this family as rich or that family as poor.  The point is, let's keep taxes low and increase revenue, because that is what people need, what our country needs.  I couldn't agree more with what John McCain wants to do regarding this subject and I believe that he has all the experience to be our next President.

New Idea to Consider

Since we are so large (we being trumpets and large being richards thighs, zoom zoom zoom...), I would like to propose an option... we should watch movies in the chemical engineering building. Plenty of seating and huge pretty screens that sadly don't get any attention outside of class. I really don't care about the building per say, but I do know that it's an excellent place to either watch things or play things... (*cough* Eric *cough*) so um, yeah...just a new idea to consider, WE don't have to do this...

I'll be up early sunday so keep your date books free cause you just might be the lucky one!

Band Camp Water...

Hey All! So to piggy back on the email Eric sent out to all of you:

I am in the OPS office, and I don't recommend drinking from the water jugs if you don't have to... mainly for two reasons:

1. long lines, like he already mentioned
2. i know where that water comes from... sometimes it isn't the greatest, and its not always cold (that only happens when we feel up to getting ice)

its not going to kill you at all, you just might feel a little strange ;) just kidding

water bottles and nalgene bottles rock, just a thought though

Audition Music Update

Music has been posted on the website.
Visit http://aambtrumpets.com/ and click on "2008 Audition Music" (on the rightside of the page)
Also, 2nd part fight songs have been posted
(why only 2nd, well, I don't have a scanner and no one has sent me 1st and 3rd to put up... so if you would like to help out, please send me a PDF of the pregame and songs and fight songs, this includes the national anthem)

I hope this helps those who still need music.

Also, the videos have been updated. I will add one or two more before band camp starts. If you want to add photos to the photobucket page, please do that as well.

You all rock!!! See ya in less than a month

Trumpet Away Trip

I'll make this first post short:

Every year the trumpets try to go to an away game so that we can be fans, and not in the band. Its also a ton of fun.

Location idea: Ohio State
date: 10/11/08
time: TBA

these are all the details i have at this point. Tickets are probably already on sale, but i suppose we need to wait until we are actually at school and can communicate with everyone in the section better. However, I would like to have more concrete plans by the first week of classes, and be able to order tickets by that week.

If you have ideas or opinions related to this, please comment here.

Trumpet Stands

I just bought a K&M 5 leg trumpet stand. I was wondering if anybody has any opinions about this stand, other trumpet stands, or trumpet stands in general.

Colored mouthpieces

As mentioned by Michelle, colored mouthpieces will not be allowed at performances starting this year.

The exceptions will be black, gold and neutral colors like clear. If you don't know if a mouthpiece is okay, probably shouldn't use it, but at least ask before you do.

Audition Music

Message from Pat Newton: Audition music for the season has been mailed out to incoming freshmen, and just recently on Friday, July 11th to upperclassmen. If you do not recieve the music in the mail please contact the band office.

NOTE: to those of you who were not too thrilled about last year's music choice, the directors have decided to return to the previous method for music auditions: scales, technique exercizes, and good ol' 'Hail Purdue'! Don't freak out if the music is not what you remember it to be.

music

I got my audition music today!! As far as I can tell, it's the same as it was in 2006 and before. But I didn't get the second page of it, for some reason. I was wondering if anyone else got it yet, and if they have a scanner or fax machine and wouldn't mind sending it to me, cuz otherwise it'll take atleast another 3 days for me to get it. :'(

Happy Birthday Eric!

It is Eric Faulkner's birthday, so lets partay!!

ode to Eric:

Eric is awesome,
Eric is great,
If I could be anyone,
I would be Eric.

Get it Trump!!!

Hey I'm an incoming freshman and want to know a little about what's gonna go on during band camp this August.  Also, try-out wise, what exactly will we be graded/judged/evaluated (all those types of words) on?  I'm not scared or nothing, I mean, I'm near close to the best you can get when it comes to marching and playing. JK, but no, I'm good and all, but just want an idea.  oh yeah, and if you were wonderin' about the title, "GET IT TRUMP," that was what my trumpet section would yell during practices and whatnot, kind of our motto.  Oh well, you pry don't get it or even care; thought it was sorta cool though.  Thanks (hope someone reads + responds)

Just Wondering

I'm an incoming freshman, hoping to play trumpet in the marching band (obviously :-] ).
I played trumpet in marching band at my high school. However, in concert band I played oboe. How much of a dampener would this put on my chances of making it into Purdue's marching band?

Potential Members

Welcome to the Purdue Trumpets blog! If you are coming to Purdue this year as a potential member of the Purdue AAMB Trumpets, feel free to post any questions or concerns you may have. Also, feel free to use this as a resource to communicate with other potential members, or even with current members. Drug Dealing

Ah drug dealing. This is the activity that makes up my summer. However, I must admit, that this job of mine is legal (sorry all you seekers). I'm a pharmacy tech at a local independent retail pharmacy. What are your summer jobs, oh Purdue trumpet section? And yes Eric, we all know yours is fighting crime in spandex. Stop reminding us!

The Birth of the Blog

Dear Web LOG (i will call you blog for short),

Today I have decided to make you my new home for all my trumpet related thoughts. You will be an easy way to share my opinions, my bloated self confidence and most of all my pure trumpet arrogance. One day, everyone (in the section) will need you to live their lives. They will wake up in the morning, and even before their morning coffee and scone, they will want to read you, oh Purduetrumpet.blogspot.com. May the gods bless you as a new internet joy, and a large step into the oblivion of the world wide web for my faithful trumpet followers.

Until next time, oh blog,
Peter
